In the first photo, you can see wind tunnels. It’s used to capture the winds in the heat of the dessert and push in the cold air to the living spaces. It’s also interesting to note that because of the dessert storms, most buildings are designed with windows facing the courtyard–think of it as the inside part of a box. No windows are exposed directly to the winds.
This second photo shows an ancient Iranian Pigeon House. It’s a step above a simple bird cage, wouldn’t you say?
